Lluís Benejam
(Barcelona, 1914- Birmingham, 1968)

<

He studied at the Conservatori del Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona with Antoni Bosom, Josep Barberà and Joan Lamote de Grignon. He also studied harmony and composition with Antoni Massana. He was part of various symphonic and chamber ensembles as violinist and violist, such as the "Labor Artis" quartet, the Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona, the Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Orquesta Ardèvol. In 1953 he won the City of Barcelona Music Prize with the work for string orchestra "Poem". In 1954 he went to Ecuador to found the National Symphony Orchestra of that country. He lived for four years and was the concertmaster and assistant conductor of this orchestra. He was also the first violin of the "String Quartet of the Ecuadorian Culture House", a group formed by: Robert Plaja, second violin; Josep Rodríguez viola; and Ernest Xancó, cello. In 1958 he moved to the United States and was concertmaster of the Birmingham City Orchestra and became professor of composition and instrumentation at Birmingham Southern College and the University of Montevallo.

His work is the product of a musician by trade; a music that shows a vitality and an open spirit, with modal reminiscences of impressionism and jazz, incorporated by a personal way of understanding music. In its extensive catalog we find a lot of chamber music, songs for voice and piano, orchestral works and concerts for violin, oboe, trumpet and saxophone.
